The Chairman of the Presidential Leadership Council, Dr. Rashad Al-Alimi, warned of the international community’s slowness in taking a firm stance on the Yemeni file, stressing that the more the international community slows down for another year, the more severe the losses will be.
In his speech before the seventy-eighth session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Thursday, he stressed that the Iranian-backed Houthi militias and terrorist groups are more dangerous in their cross-border threats, in addition to their terrible violations of human rights around which our nations have united under the umbrella of this institution for more than seventy years.
Al-Alimi reviewed the concessions made by the legitimate government in order to achieve peace and end the war, and how the militias responded to these concessions with intransigence and an attempt to achieve new gains. He said, “Today, I do not think that we in the government still have more concessions to offer, or to change our understanding of militias that we know well and can.” Predicting its intentions for decades to come, and if we do so, this approach will return our people to the eras of slavery, frustration, and oblivion. Indeed, our country is likely to turn into a hotbed for the export of terrorism, and a spark for a regional and international conflict that cannot be contained through diplomatic means.”
Al-Alimi stressed that any laxity on the part of the international community or neglect of the legal status of the state, or even dealing with the militias as a de facto authority, would make the practice of repression and violation of public freedoms a behavior that cannot be eliminated under any circumstances.
He pointed to the approach of the Houthi militias, for whom peace offers are nothing but trial balloons, which should be dealt with from a tactical perspective to control more resources, and postpone the decision on military confrontation until better conditions are achieved, which is what happened in their disavowal of all previous agreements, the most recent of which is Stockholm Agreement.
Al-Alimi stressed that with the resumption of the laudable efforts of the brothers in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Sultanate of Oman, hopes are renewed that the Houthi militias will submit to the popular, regional and international will, and recognize that the state guarantor of rights and freedoms, and the rule of law enforcement on the basis of justice and equal citizenship, is the only one that will make our country safer and more stabile in its regional and international surroundings.
In his speech, Al-Alimi presented a picture of the current scene, and points of progress and failure in our country afflicted by the Houthi militia war supported by the Iranian regime, pointing to the efforts made by the Yemeni government over the past months, with the support of brothers and friends, to fulfill its inevitable obligations, despite the disastrous repercussions of the Houthi militia attacks on petroleum facilities and stopping from export for a whole year.
He pointed out, on the other hand, that there are still many heavy entitlements that exceed the capabilities of the Yemeni government, with the dominance of the war economy fueled by militias, the influx of tens of thousands of illegal immigrants, and the effects of climate change that leave behind hundreds of victims annually, and devastated agricultural lands.
He stressed the need to provide sufficient guarantees for sustainable peace, which must be based on the three terms of reference agreed upon nationally, regionally and internationally, and resorting to international legitimacy, as stated in the Saudi initiative, in addition to justice and fairness, addressing the effects of the past, and the main outstanding issues of a national dimension.
