ارتفع عدد ضحايا حرائق الغابات المدمرة في جزيرة ماوي الأمريكية إلى 110 قتلى، وقال حاكم هاواي جوش جرين أمس الأربعاء، إن عدد القتلى ارتفع إلى 110، مع تفقد نحو 38% من المنطقة المدمرة.

وأضاف جرين في مؤتمر صحفي، إن أكثر من 1000 شخص في عداد المفقودين، وحذر من أن عدد القتلى قد يرتفع بشكل كبير.

تمشيط المباني المحترقة

يواصل المتطوعون تمشيط المباني المحترقة باستخدام الكلاب البوليسية، ووصل فريق كبير من خبراء الطب الشرعي إلى الجزيرة للمساعدة في التعرف على الجثث، بحسب تقارير إعلامية.

وقال الرئيس الأمريكي جو بايدن في وقت سابق يوم الثلاثاء، إنه سيتوجه قريبا إلى هاواي، بعد أكثر حرائق الغابات فتكًا منذ قرن.

وأوضح بايدن في كلمة ألقاها في ميلووكي بولاية ويسكونسن: "سأتوجه أنا وزوجتي جيل إلى هاواي في أقرب وقت ممكن". مشيرًا إلى أنه يريد التأكد من حصول سكان مقاطعة ماوي في الولاية على الدعم الذي يحتاجون إليه، متعهدا بأن كل ما يحتاجونه، سيحصلون عليه.

وكان بايدن تعهد بإغاثة الحكومة لشعب هاواي بعد يومين من اندلاع الحرائق الأسبوع الماضي، وقال في منشور على وسائل التواصل الاجتماعي: "طمأنت الحاكم بأن هاواي ستستمر في الحصول على كل ما تحتاجه من الحكومة الاتحادية".

الحرائق دمرت مركز لاهينا

اندلعت حرائق الغابات في 8 أغسطس الحاليّ في عدة أماكن في ماوي وجزيرة هاواي المجاورة، والتي تحمل نفس اسم الولاية الأمريكية.

وتضررت بلدة لاهاينا الصغيرة في ماوي، التي كان عدد سكانها 13 ألف نسمة قبل الكارثة، بشكل خاص، وتبدو العديد من الشوارع هناك وكأنها منطقة حرب، وقد دُمر مركز لاهاينا بالكامل، بينما لا تزال فرق الطوارئ تبحث عن المفقودين.
