UN calls for cessation of hostilities as humanitarian crisis exasperates in Sudan

The United Nations Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) expressed deep concern over impact of the ongoing armed conflict in Sudan on civilians in many parts of the country and called on warring parties to stop fighting and facilitate humanitarian access.

The United Nations Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) expressed deep concern over impact of the ongoing armed conflict in Sudan on civilians in many parts of the country and called on warring parties to stop fighting and facilitate humanitarian access.

OCHA said fighting has been raging in North Darfur, West Darfur, Khartoum, North Kordofan and Al-Gezira States despite repeated appeals on the Sudanese warring parties to cease hostilities, protect civilians and facilitate humanitarian access.

Nearly 410,000 people in Al-Fashir Locality, North Darfur, have been displaced within only six months, many of them displaced more than once, the International Organization for Migration said.

OCHA said attacks on civilians and infrastructure are continuing in many parts of Sudan blocking delivery of humanitarian assistance to these areas.

Meanwhile, the country has been plagued with cholera outbreak since July where nearly 26,000 cases and 722 resulted deaths were reported in 11 out 18 states.

UN humanitarian partners and Sudanese health authorities are accelerating response to the epidemic, said the UN Spokesman Farhan Haq.

He explained that the last phase of anti cholera vaccination campaign started last week aiming at reaching 1.4 million people in the states of Kassala and Al-Gadarif (east Sudan) and Nahr Al-Neel north of the country.
