في إنجاز طبي، وإنساني، نادر ، نجح مستشفى دله النخيل بالرياض، من إنقاذ حياة مريض، يبلغ من العمر 58 سنة، من الشلل النصفي التام للأطراف السفلية، والقدمين، ومن الإعاقة الدائمة، ومساعدته وفي وقت قياسي، على ترك الكرسي المتحرك الذي لازمه لعدة أشهر مؤخرا، ليعود بعد ثلاثة أيام من إجراء التدخل الجراحي، لحياته الطبيعية.

وتفصيلا، بدأت قصة المريض، بوصوله على كرسي متحرك لعيادة جراحة المخ والأعصاب والتي يشرف عليها د. محمد الطالب، استشاري جراحة المخ والأعصاب، واستشاري جراحة العمود الفقري بمستشفى دله النخيل، حيث كان المريض يشكو من ألم شديد في أسفل الظهر لعدة أشهر، وتبعه الشعور بتخدر بأسفل البطن ومنطقة الحوض، والأطراف السفلية في الجهتين، وضعف شديد بالعضلات، حتى فقد القدرة على الوقوف والتوازن، أو المشي بشكل تام.

وبينت الأشعة بداية حدوث تلف واعتلال في الحبل الشوكي، بسبب هذا الضغط الشديد والمستمر، والذي قد يؤدي لحدوث شلل سفلي كامل ودائم، في حال لم يتم التدخل الجراحي العاجل لإزالته.
عقب ذلك، تم إجراء العملية للمريض بإشراف د. محمد الطالب، وباستخدام الميكروسكوب الجراحي الدقيق لاستئصال هذه الكتلة الورمية بدقة وعناية فائقة، حرصا على سلامة الحبل الشوكي. وتبين أن هذه الكتلة الورمية عبارة عن ورم وعائي كهفي، من النوع النادر جدا. وتمت إزالة الكتلة بنجاح ودون حدوث مضاعفات، أو إصابات للحبل الشوكي.
وبعد نجاح العملية، بدأ المريض باستعادة الإحساس تدريجيا بأطرافه السفلية والقدمين، وأصبح يحركهما بشكل بسيط جدًا، كما استعادت عضلاته قوتها المعتادة، وتمكن من المشي بشكل طبيعي دون استخدام الكرسي المتحرك، ودون مساعدة. وأوضح د.محمد الطالب، أن الورم الذي كان يعاني منه المريض من الأورام النادرة جدًا على مستوى العالم، والتي لا تتجاوز نسبة حدوثها 0.22 %؜ حالة/مليون شخص/السنة.
