وقال الكولونيل إيزاك تايلور، المتحدث باسم القوات المسلحة الأميركية في كوريا، إن جنديا أميركياً كان في رحلة عند المنطقة الأمنية المشتركة بين الكوريتين "عبر بإرادته ودون تصريح من إدارة خط ترسيم الحدود العسكرية إلى جمهورية كوريا (الشمالية) الديمقراطية الشعبية".
وأضاف تايلور: "نعتقد أنه محتجز حالياً في كوريا (الشمالية) الديمقراطية ونعمل مع نظرائنا في الجيش الشعبي الكوري لحل هذا الواقعة"، في إشارة إلى جيش كوريا الشمالية.
جنود من كوريا الشمالية يراقبون المنطقة العازلة التي تفصل بين الكوريتين (أرشيفية)وحددت صحيفة دونغ-إيه إلبو، نقلا عن الجيش الكوري الجنوبي، هوية الشخص على أنه ترافيس كينغ، وهو جندي من الدرجة الثانية في الجيش الأميركي. وفيما بعد، حذفت الصحيفة الاسم.
من جهتها قالت شبكة "سي. بي. إس. نيوز" إنه قبل الحادث كانت تجري مرافقة الجندي إلى الولايات المتحدة كي يخضع لتأديب، لكن بعد المرور بأمن المطار عاد بطريقة ما وتمكن من الانضمام إلى الجولة الحدودية.
وتختبر كوريا الشمالية صواريخ قادرة على حمل رؤوس نووية وتضمنت التجارب إطلاق صاروخ باليستي عابر للقارات يعمل بالوقود الصلب الأسبوع الماضي.
وتحظر وزارة الخارجية الأميركية على مواطنيها دخول كوريا الشمالية "بسبب استمرار الخطر الجاد بالاعتقال والاحتجاز طويل الأجل للمواطنين الأميركيين".
وطُبق الحظر بعدما احتجزت السلطات الكورية الشمالية الطالب الجامعي الأميركي أوتو وارمبير خلال جولة في البلاد. وتوفي وارمبير في 2017 بعد أيام من إطلاق سراحه من السجن وعودته إلى الولايات المتحدة في حالة غيبوبة.

أفادت وكالة الاستخبارات الكورية الجنوبية لوكالة فرانس برس الثلاثاء، أن الجنود الكوريين الشماليين المتمركزين في منطقة كورسك الروسية لم يشاركوا في أي قتال منذ منتصف يناير، بعد أن زعمت كييف انسحابهم من خط المواجهة لتكبدهم خسائر فادحة.

وأفادت القوات الأوكرانية، قبل يومين، بانسحاب الجنود الكوريين الشماليين الذين أرسلوا للقتال إلى جانب القوات الروسية في منطقة كورسك الروسية.
وقال المتحدث باسم قوات العمليات الخاصة الكولونيل أولكسندر كيندراتنكو إنّه "خلال الأسابيع الثلاثة الماضية، لم نر أو نرصد أيّ نشاط أو مواجهات عسكرية مع الكوريين الشماليين.

لكنّ الكولونيل كيندراتنكو لم يرغب في تقدير حجم الخسائر في صفوف القوات الكورية الشمالية، مرجحًا أن يكون الهدف من انسحابها أن "تتعافى ويتم استخدامها بطريقة أخرى".
