وجاء في بيان أصدره الإثنين رئيس المجلس البلدي لمونبليير وليام فريزر "لم يحدث هذا الأمر إطلاقا منذ أن بني السد، لذا لا سوابق على صعيد الأضرار المحتملة"، في إشارة إلى سد رايتسفيل ونهر نورث برانش.
ولم ترد على الفور تقارير بشأن سقوط وفيات أو تسجيل إصابات في الولاية من جراء الأمطار التي قال مسؤولون إنها تسبّبت بفيضانات في وسط مونبليير، المدينة البالغ عدد سكانها ثمانية آلاف نسمة.
وجاء هطول الأمطار الغزيرة التي تخطى منسوبها 20 سنتيمترا في بعض الأماكن وفق المصلحة الوطنية للأرصاد الجوية، بعدما تسبّبت فيضانات مباغتة في نيويورك بمقتل امرأة الأحد.
شهد شمال شرق الولايات المتحدة بغالبيته، بما في ذلك نيويورك ونيوجيرسي وكونيتيكت وبنسلفانيا وماساتشوستس وفيرمونت، هطول أمطار غزيرة الأحد والإثنين ما أدى إلى فيضانات تسببت بقطع جسور وطرق.
بحلول ظهر الثلاثاء كان قد تم إنقاذ أكثر من مئة شخص كانوا محاصرين في سيارات وبيوت في فيرمونت، وفق ما أعلن مسؤولون.
وتحاول السلطات إجلاء آخرين جوا بواسطة مروحية، وفق ما أفادت صحيفة نيويورك تايمز.
وقال المسؤول في فريق البحث والإنقاذ الحضري في فيرمونت مايك كانون "لا زلنا في مرحلة بالغة الخطورة من هذه الكارثة"، مشيرا إلى ان عمليات الإنقاذ مستمرة.
وشبّه الحاكم فيل سكوت الفيضانات بالعاصفة المدارية أيرين التي أوقعت ستة قتلى في الولاية في العام 2011.
وقال في تصريح للصحافيين إن "ما نشهده من دمار وفيضانات في مختلف أنحاء فيرمونت كارثي" وغير مسبوق.
وعلى الرغم من ظهور الشمس الثلاثاء شدّد سكوت على أن "الأمر لم ينته".
وتابع "نتوقّع مزيدا من الأمطار لاحقا هذا الأسبوع"، محذّرا من مزيد من الفيضانات بسبب تشبّع الأرض بالمياه.
ويقول علماء إن التغيّر المناخي يفاقم مخاطر هطول الأمطار الغزيرة لأن الغلاف الجوي الأكثر دفئا يختزن كميات أكبر من المياه.

دعت المديرية العامة للدفاع المدني إلى أخذ الحيطة والحذر، وضرورة البقاء في أماكن آمنة والابتعاد عن أماكن تجمُّع السيول والأودية وعدم السباحة فيها، والالتزام بالتعليمات المعلنة عبر وسائل الإعلام المختلفة ومواقع التواصل الاجتماعي، وذلك لهطول أمطار رعدية على معظم مناطق المملكة، حتى السبت المقبل. وأوضحت أن منطقة مكة المكرمة ستتأثر بأمطار خفيفة إلى متوسطة تؤدي إلى جريان السيول وتساقط البرد ورياح هابطة مثيرة للأتربة والغبار لتشمل جدة والعاصمة المقدسة وبحرة والجموم وخليص والكامل ورابغ والليث والقنفذة والطائف وميسان واضم والعرضيات والمويه والخرمة ورنية وتربة، كما ستتأثر منطقة الرياض بأمطار خفيفة ورياح هابطة مثيرة للأتربة والغبار لتشمل الرياض العاصمة وعفيف والدوادمي والقويعية وشقراء والغاط والزلفي والمجمعة ورماح والرين وثادق وحريملاء والدرعية وضرما والمزاحمية والدلم. وأشارت المديرية إلى أن منطقة المدينة المنورة ستتأثر بأمطار خفيفة إلى متوسطة، وخفيفة على مناطق الباحة وتبوك والجوف والحدود الشمالية وحائل والشرقية.
